Last 9th of October the first prescribed burning included in the C7 action (preservation of adult black pine forests adapted to the natural lightning fire regime) was performed. The objective is to emulate the effect of lightning fires (with a high recurrence and low intensity) that have allowed to certain black pine populations to be preserved, sometimes surviving large fires forest effects. Low-intensity fires help to maintain an adult and mature forest structure with large distance between canopy and surface and low shrubs coverture, which greatly facilitates trees survival when a forest fire occurs. The burning was directed by fire-fighters from the regional government (Generalitat de Catalunya) in collaboration with members of Montsant Natural Park, one of the protected natural areas in which this action takes place. Forest Technology Centre of Catalonia researchers will monitor the effects of burning. Hand tools and drip torches were used by a team composed of specialized fire-fighters that followed the guidelines of the burning plan drafted for the preservation of this area.
